Wisdom in truly unlikely places

In these first days of the new year, I’ve been taking stock – as I’m sure many of you have been doing – of what is important, what my priorities are and about what I want to achieve. I’ve already shared with you a few of my own personal health resolutions, but my biggest priority again this year is to become a greener, more eco-conscious person. Although I’ve made many progresses over the last year, there is still much room for improvements.

In my reflections, I realized that I had started wondering about the “whys” more then the “hows”. We are creatures of “hows”: How can I be healthier? How can I make more money? How can I be better? But how about asking why? Why am I not as healthy as I would like to be? Why do I not make the kinda of salary I wish I had? Why am I not the best person I can be?

I started thinking about going green and doing all these things. Asking the “Hows” was a bigger focus of my year in 2009. But last night, I surprised myself with a question I couldn’t fully answer:

Why do I have to make all these adjustments and changes in order to save the Earth?

Where did this questioning come from? You’ll never guess: From a Vancouver 2010 Olympics commercial. As they were talking about the site and environmentally sounds planning and developments surrounding the event, I was intrigued by a quote from the narrator:

“Treat the earth well: It was not given to us by our grand-parents, it was lent to us by our children.”

There is definitely beautiful awareness to be passed on from such a statement, but it also frustrated me a bit because the earth, and the shape it’s in, does have to do with our grand-parents and everyone that came before them. I’m not saying they necessarily knew how all of this would come to be, but it is very important to know where the problems come from in order to understand what we need to do and why.

Where am I going with this?

I’ve decided to make my first few posts of the year about understanding our past so we can better save our future. Over the next few weeks, I will be posting articles on movements, pioneers, scientific phenomena, theories and all kinds of topics related to the birth of our modern environmental conscience.

I hope you’ll come and read as I post them. If you have suggestions on topics, feel free to write them here. I’m hoping to make this year one of learning and information. I hope you’ll take the journey with me.

I fell upon this website recently:

We have to think of our mother earth and as rightly said it is a treasure passed on to us and we must not pass on a polluted earth to our next generations. We can get more eco friendly and help the pollution levels.

Loved your blog! I also am trying to be more eco friendly and am finding it harder than I thought. Good luck on your journey!

Being eco friendly is definitely a life style. I found it to be some what pricey but if you shop around a little..it's possible! I started shopping online (this way I decrease my carbon footprint) to find everyday items that are eco friendly, like cleaning supplies. It's something we can ALL do to help our beautiful earth. You can check where I shop here: http://bit.ly/acxDlD

My priority is to kick butt, set trends.

Human contact? Not necessary for me interests: collecting, propagating and planting.

Excellent post.

I'm always involved in welcoming newbies to the green lifestyle.
I started simply by looking at products that other green lifers love. I then found them all over the internet and shopping online too. I've never been a big online shopper but have found most of my cleaning products cheaper online than at the big places like whole foods.
Check out http://www.ecodirectstore.com
it's my new place to shop

and check out mrs. meyers cleaning products!

Always read the labels and Happy Greening!

The earth of today is the responsibility of everyone, we all have an effect on its health, if older generations can change their ways, and the next generation can be educated in the importance of being eco aware then we can begin to slow the rate of damage being done and maybe one day begin to reverse it.

Hi Yanic! I enjoyed your post. It's nice to find a kindred spirit in the 2011 quest to become more eco-friendly. I LOVE the quote! Puts the world in to perspective when you realize who it really belongs to.

Yes that is right ...unfortunately what we are giving our grand children is a polluted earth which will make their health deteriorate.Let us get aware and take the small steps to clean the earth.

Change is in each of us and it is up to each of us to change our habits to protect our environment. I love the idea of asking why instead of how. Why gets to the underlying root of the problem - why is the earth polluted? When we have answers to why we can come up with solutions.

It is our responsibility to take care and protect our environment. Adapting a green lifestyle is a good way to make a change. It may not create a huge impact, but in our own little way, we can, as you said, save the Earth.

Having brought out all the food we had put in storage, we will not need to buy much besides some vitamin C sources, but our 100-mile radius will be breached.

Hi!

I really like your blog, there are some great articles on here!

One of the ways I like to help the planet is something as simple as using eco-friendly wet kit bags. They are great!
